In Memoriam Dr. Lajos Timár (13 November 1944 – 24 May 2026)

Dr. Lajos Timár, retired associate professor of the University of Pannonia, was a special character in the university life. Most people knew him not as a researcher or lecturer, but as a tireless teacher of dance, which was an essential part of his being and accompanied him throughout his entire life.

He first encountered the “folk dances” during his studies in Munich, after which he introduced them at the University nearly 30 years ago. Interest was already high at the very first occasion (with 40 participants), and attendees requested that the dance evenings become a regular event. Since then, the program has continued uninterrupted, attracting an ever-growing number of participants.

Professor Timár created an atmosphere filled with warmth and joy. He did not merely teach dance steps — he built a community. Friendships, romances, and even marriages were formed during these dance evenings.
At the same time, he brought generations together: besides current students, alumni also returned with their children, while university staff and local residents also joined the community. International students also enjoyed attending these events, so different nationalities were represented not only in the dances but also as participants, bringing them together and building relationships among them. Anyone could join at any time for free.

Each year, he organized three balls where, alongside the ceremonial “dance order” and the tradition of knighting ceremonies, he also taught etiquette.

He taught dance in many places, always with great joy, because he wished to share with as many people and generations as possible all the happiness and sense of community that dance meant to him.

He continuously researched the dances of neighboring nations to refresh and expand his repertoire, teaching ever-new circle dances and partner-changing dances with clear explanations and demonstrations, alongside waltzes, polkas, and tangos.

Dr. Lajos Timár was a highly educated and true gentleman with a gentle sense of humor. His personality radiated calmness, respect, modesty, and understanding.
His work and dedication were recognized on several occasions with awards and honors, yet perhaps the greatest recognition for him was the love and appreciation that surrounded him.

His passing deeply shooked everyone — not only the members of the club, but people throughout the city remember him with great respect.
It was always his wish that what he had started — and what he had dedicated his life — would continue.

We preserve the memory of Professor Timár with gratitude and respect. 🕯️🕊️
